Borealis claims to have developed the first PP heterophasic copolymer packaging film grade that offers outstanding ductility together with excellent transparency. Borpact BC918CF is said to combine stiffness, heat and impact resistance with high gloss and low haze, providing the high clarity of PP homopolymers together with the tough, non brittle performance of heterophasic copolymers.
The company says this balance of easy tear, stiffness and good aesthetics will create opportunities for converters and end product manufacturers of cast, blown film and thermoformed applications such as retortable stand-up pouches, label and lidding films.
The combined mechanical and aesthetic advantages are said to ensure attractive packaging with reduced potential for handling or storage related damage - particularly important for items stored at low temperatures such as thermoformed modified atmospheric packaging trays for fruit and other chilled food.
According to Borealis, Borpact BC918CF’s toughness prevents brittleness on blown film lines and allows significant downgauging of the film compared to standard block copolymers, resulting in material and cost savings of up to 20 per cent.
The new grade is based on the proprietary Borstar multi modal process that enables molecular tailoring of PE and PP to meet specific needs.
