BOPP barrier alternative to PVdC

26 May 2014

Torayfan CBS2 film is an "environment conscious", clear, high oxygen- and moisture barrier BOPP film from Toray Plastics (America), for use as the inside sealant web for the packaging of bakery items, snacks, fruit and nut mixes, and confections, as well as dry pet food and non-food items.

Toray says it can be used to create value added transparent PVdC-free laminations "that provide an excellent oxygen and moisture barrier", to help keep foods fresh, flavourful, and aromatic. Heatsealable, the new film also offers end-users an alternative to coated OPP and PET grades, and is "the more economical choice" compared with aluminum oxide (AlOx)-coated films.

In addition, because it is available in 70 and 80 gauge, CBS2 film presents a downgauged alternative to thicker OPP films. It can also be used as an unsupported web for flexo and gravure surface printing.

The new film's excellent barrier properties are achieved by Toray's resin technology and a proprietary non-PVdC barrier layer. The non-barrier side is designed for heatsealability. CBS2 is also said to provide superior oil and puncture resistance, and excellent stiffness. It will run on both HFFS and VFFS equipment.

"PVdC is not acceptable to today's end-users who want a clear barrier film that is environment friendly," says Kerri Boyens, product manager, Torayfan Division. "PVdC-free CBS2 film is an innovative solution that offers excellent barrier functionality without PVdC's environmental issues."
