Bobst's bonanza order

27 November 2006

JBF-RAK, in the United Arab Emirates, has ordered three primary and four secondary Atlas slitter rewinders, together with roll handling systems and a 2,450mm wide General K5000 high performance vacuum metallizer, for converting BOPET film. The £6M contract is one of the largest received by Bobst Group Business Area Flexible Materials UK operations since Atlas and General became part of the Group three years ago. The machines are due to be in full production during the second half of 2007.

JBF-RAK is a joint venture company established between JBF Industries, of Mumbai, India and Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority, of the UAE. JBF is the third largest manufacturer of polyester chips in India, providing half of the country’s solidified polymer used in the production of polyester filament Partially Oriented Yarns (POY), for the textile industry. Following dramatic expansion in recent years, the company announced the $90M joint venture with Ras Al Khaimah, to build a manufacturing plant in the Emirate for polyester resin chips and BOPET film production, for packaging and high end industrial applications.

The new plant, the first by an Indian company in the Emirate, will have three lines with a production capacity of 300t of BOPET film per day, largely for export to the USA, EU, China and other parts of Asia. The facility is expected to generate a turnover of around $350M in its first full year of operations.

The two Atlas primary film slitters, one 8.7m wide and one 4.2m, are centre type winders with advanced computer control, featuring automatic or manual knife positioning and rewind arm positioning. They will process film at high speeds with rewind diameters up to 1,200mm and substantially improved operator ergonomics, including three fully integrated finished reel handling systems. Parent roll diameters can be up to 1,400mm and the minimum slit widths can be as narrow as 300mm, with off-line edge trim spoolers. The secondary slitters, including two Atlas CW800 machines, will be used for narrower width slitting of both the plain and metallized film.

The General K5000 metallizer was specifically designed to run in conjunction with the Atlas CW800 slitter rewinder, enabling the film producer to slit finished reels of metallized film in to narrower widths for printing or other converting processes. It has an advanced web winding mechanism using larger diameter reels at high coating speeds with a 595mm diameter coating drum, claimed to improve machine output by up to 50 per cent compared with other metallizers. It is believed to be the highest output machine, width for width currently available, also with substantially reduced running costs.
