Bobst equipment boosts business at Weedon

2 February 2010

UK corrugated packaging converter Weedon PSC has installed a new Visionfold folder-gluer and a Visioncut diecutter from Bobst at its Hednesford site. The machines are needed to meet increased demand from discount retailers for Weedon PSC’s retail ready packaging. The Visionfold is the first of its type in the UK and has replaced three existing machines.

“We have seen strong growth in demand for innovative corrugated packaging solutions over the past 12 months,” says managing director John Weedon. “Within this growth there has been a noticeable increase in orders for retail ready packaging. To satisfy this increased level of business we need to expand our conversion capacity.”

The Visionfold is a 170cm wide Easyset version of the folder-gluer. The Easyset system eliminates the need for cranks and spindles to set the machine, the operator simply pushing the carriers into position by hand. The folder-gluer also features Bobst’s Accufeed system, which includes a blank aligning unit and is said to ensure quick and accurate setting of the machine.

The line, which was specified with a Baumer hhs multipoint glue system, has replaced three existing folder-gluer lines.

“With the Visionfold we not only get a huge increase in capacity, which secures our ability to keep our customers supplied, but we also get the opportunity to fold and glue types of work we couldn’t before,” adds Mr Weedon. “On top of this, the quality of folding from the Visionfold is ideally suited to packaging destined for machine erecting, something our customers increasingly specify.”

The Visioncut diecutter will supplement the plant’s existing Bobst’s SPO 160-Vision. The new machine features an increased running speed of 4,800 sheets/hour, and enhanced ergonomics which make it possible to change jobs in under 10min.

“Because of the increased demand for our products, we have been running the SPO 160-Vision 24 hours a day. The Visioncut will give us the extra capacity we need, and also upgrades us to the latest technology,” concludes Mr Weedon.
