Bioplastics conference confirms growth in interest

4 December 2006

Bioplastics are making great progress both in their technical development and market introduction into Europe. This was confirmed by many of the speakers and attendees at the recent ‘First European Bioplastics Conference’, in Brussels. The event, organized by European Bioplastics, the association of the bioplastics industry in Europe, was attended by nearly 300 participants from 27 countries. This confirmed the results of a recent survey by European Bioplastics concerning market development in 2006, where many association members reported a “boom-like” increase in interest.

In his inaugural address, Heinz Zourek, director-general of DG Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission, emphasized the significance of bioplastics for sustainable development. "Bioplastics contribute to climate protection, save fossil resources and create jobs in future oriented sectors", he stated. "We hope that bioplastics can increase their market share in Europe."

Innovations in material and product development were presented during the conference. Industrial users reported on their experiences in packaging and fibre products. Twenty-five companies exhibited their products in the accompanying exhibition. All contributions to the conference are available on CD-ROM.

Biobased and biodegradable plastics are said to be among the most promising lead markets for innovations in Europe. The second conference will be held at the end of next year.
