Biodegradable film chosen

2 March 2006

Slovenian producer Tosama has switched to using film that will biodegrade in waste water to wrap its of hygienic tampons. NatureFlex NE30, from Innovia Films, is said to be one of a small number of packaging materials that meet the criteria of the Miti Test (ISO14851) for ambient aqueous biodegradability. Manufactured from wood pulp from managed plantations, it will fully biodegrade in water in under 24 days, the company states.

Tosama says its use of NatureFlex reflects consumer demand for more eco friendly packaging. As director of the company's logistic centre Gornik Franc explains: "One of our goals is to move towards using only biodegradable packaging materials that are friendly to the environment. Wrapping tampons in biodegradable material is accepted by the market and may eventually be expected by the consumer."

In addition to their biodegradable and compostable credentials, NatureFlex films are said to have an extremely wide heat sealing range from 70-200degC for excellent high speed line performance without compromising pack seals. NE30 is coated on both sides with a high moisture barrier sealant layer and has natural deadfold properties. Tear tapes are also available.
