Bio-based alternative to polyamide film

26 April 2013

Flexible food packaging is one of the potential application areas for a new polyamide film from MF Folien which is based on Royal DSM's bio-based EcoPaXX polyamide 410. The cast film is now available in 30, 40 and 50 micron grades.

Rainer Leising, general sales manager at MF Folien, says: "EcoPaXX polyamide 410 films are strong and transparent with a high puncture resistance. They have a reduced moisture transmission rate versus polyamide 6 film, and a comparable oxygen barrier; when fully wet, the oxygen barrier is even higher."

Recently, three grades of EcoPaXX were awarded the 'Certified Bio-based Product' label by the US Department of Agriculture, certifying a proven bio-based content of around 70%. The bio-based content of EcoPaXX polyamide 410 stems from one of its building blocks, derived from castor oil obtained from plants which are not used for food products.

According to Kees Tintel, business manager EcoPaXX at DSM, "this material, in addition to its green performance, delivers the same or even better properties compared with its traditional alternatives."
