Biggest bio plastics plant

18 December 2007

US company Cereplast is to build the world’s largest bio based plastics resin manufacturing and distribution facility at Seymour, in Indiana. The Los Angles based company will initially invest more than $7M to equip an existing 100,000ft2 building. It plans to manufacture up to half a billion pounds/year of its bio based plastics resin at the new facility when it reaches full capacity in 2010.

Cereplast manufactures two families of plastics resins based on biopolymers and mixtures of plant starches. Its Compostables product line, which has earned certification as biodegradable and compostable in the US and Europe, replaces 100 per cent of the petroleum based additives found in traditional plastics with renewable, plant based starches. The Hybrid Resins range replaces half or more of the petroleum based content in plastics resin with bio based compounds such as corn starch or tapioca starch.

Cereplast says plastics manufacturers can process its bio based resins on conventional equipment, but the starch based resins require less energy in the production process as they require significantly lower machine temperatures to process. Because the bio based resins contain less petroleum products, they are also said to be less susceptible to volatility in oil prices.
