Better bio-film option for paper products

26 November 2009

An improved BASF biodegradable plastics with a reportedly higher content of renewable raw materials and suitable for coating paper cups and boxes, and as a shrink wrap material, is due on the market in the first quarter of 2010.

Ecovio FS Paper consists of BASF Ecoflex FS, a new bio-based biodegradable polyester, and cornstarch derived PLA (polylactic acid). Use of Ecoflex FS has raised the proportion of bio-based material in Ecovio FS Paper to 75% according to Jürgen Keck, head of BASF’s global business with biodegradable plastics.

In addition Ecovio FS Paper is easy to process and has good adhesion to the paper, even when applied in thin layers for paper cups and paperboard boxes, it is said.

A second product in the ‘special film’ range, Ecovio FS Shrink Film uses Ecoflex FS to achieve a 66% bio-based material. Its mechanical load capacity at a film thickness of 25 micron is greater than that of a conventional polyethylene film at 50 micron thick, claims BASF.
