'Best ever' metallizers meeting

18 May 2005

This spring's European Metallizers Association general meeting was a success, both in terms of attendance and the feedback from those who attended, the organization reports. "The percentage of member companies attending was the highest on record and built on the success of the Barcelona meeting. Five new members were admitted to the EMA at the meeting including the first non European associate member."

The format for this meeting was changed to allow a greater number of guest speakers to be included in the programme, plus a tour of a local brewery that tied in well with the Paper Committee's project to develop a standard for metallized label wash-off on long necked bottles. Another innovation was the introduction of 'Open Content Presentations' - four suppliers taking the opportunity to introduce themselves and their products to the meeting.

The general interest presentations were also identified by delegates as an area where the meeting had excelled and provided coverage of key issues for the packaging industry.

Ashok Pratap Singh, of Libra High Seas Merchants, compared the markets that metallizing companies in Europe might be involved in with those that Indian and Chinese companies would address, and looked at the different approaches each would adopt when considering their strategies. Other guest speakers included Deyter Leykamm, of Krones, who covered 'Label application – trends and future requirements for the beer and soft drink market"; Tim Rothwell, packaging sector analyst for Lansdown Captal, on recent trends in the packaging sector and the impact on markets for metallized film and paper; and Roger van der Linden of the Borealis Kallo Group, on current EU environmental legislation and its likely impact on the packaging sector.

The changes to the meeting format and developments in the attendance were widely welcomed by the members. Paper Committee chairman Jost Orichel, of Alupa, commented: "This is a further development of the positive changes the EMA has introduced in the last 12 months and I consider this to have been the best general meeting I have ever attended" – a comment that was echoed by many other delegates. EMA president Mark Gooseman was also very positive about the meeting. "We have already been working hard on the programme for the autumn 2005 and spring 2006 meetings. We're confident that we can maintain the standard set here with some very interesting guest speakers lined up for the Lisbon meeting".

The EMA's autumn general meeting will be held in Lisbon on September 29-30, 2005.
