Automated slitting at Amcor

29 March 2005

Amcor Flexibles Packaging, at Winterbourne, UK, has ordered a fully automated Deacro slitter rewinder with integrated roll handling and packaging line from TS Converting Equipment and SCM Materials Handling. "Both slitter and the reel handling system have been specified to minimize operator intervention, and improve productivity and quality," comments Tim Self, of TS Converting, "This system will be one of the most technologically advanced, automated lines in Europe."

At 2.7m wide and 1,000mm rewind diameter, the slitter is claimed to be one of the largest, duplex, centre winders in existence. Existing technology currently used on the company's automatic turret winders has been employed to meet Amcor's demanding specification. The machine will produce a wide variety of slit coil widths, with a major emphasis on short downtime between size changes.

Automatic features include knife setting, tension control, finished reel cut-off and web transfer system, reel ejection, and core positioning. The machine can be set to run multiple sets of reels continuously, without operator intervention.

SCM has produced a complete package of automation for the slitting, and downstream reel handling and packing technology. The packing line communicates with the Deacro slitter and the Amcor Flexibles mainframe computer for roll tracking and customer data information. When the slitter has automatically ejected the finished reels on to the SCM transport conveyor, they are weighed individually and labels applied to the inside of the core and on the outside of each reel.

After the reels have been automatically wrapped, they are transferred through the line to the robotic palletizing area where they are accumulated for distribution.
