Alternative treatment

14 August 2008

Pulse Roll Label Products has launched Primus-AL, a UV primer for in-line application on aluminium surfaces prior to printing and coating. The technology is an alternative to the mechanical pre-treatment of aluminium foil using corona, flame and other methods of surface alteration.

“It is well known that printing and coating of aluminium metallised substrates offer a significant challenge,” says Pulse managing director Gary Seward. “This is due to the chemistry of the material that makes it difficult to obtain good adhesion. Primus-Al is supplied as a single component liquid that is applied using the flexographic printing concept and is set using UV curing.

“This is a massive improvement and offers a cost effective alternative to traditional mechanical pre-treatment methods,” he claims.” Applications for Primus-Al include both backed and unsupported aluminium foil, where we are seeing increased use in packaging and container construction such as in protective lids for dairy products.”
