Alcan ‘first’ in degradable barrier resins

9 June 2006

What is believed to be the world’s first biodegradable barrier technology for films will be introduced at SPF 2006, the Maack Business Services films conference in Düsseldorf , on October 24-25. The technology, based on a blend of silicone oxide (SiOx, for the barrier) and polylactic acid (PLA, for the biodegradability), has been developed by Alcan Packaging.

The Alcan presentation will be one of 26 given during the event by suppliers of materials, equipment and technology, film makers and by major end users. It will be complemented in a session on biodegradable materials by presentations from Mater-Bi supplier Novamont, starch based film supplier Plantic, and PLA procecssor Maag.

The preceeding barrier packaging session will feature new transparent, retortable high barrier resins from Eval/Kuraray; new developments in EVOH for stretch and shrink films from Nippon Gohsei; Dow on PVdC use on multilayer blown film lines together with higher temperature polymers such as polyamide, PP and LLDPE; the latest look at oxygen scavengers by Ciba; and a review of compliance testing from the Fraunhofer Institut.

Nylons will be another focus of attention, with presentations from DSM and Ube. They will share a session with Chevron Phillips, on styrenic copolymers, with Mitsui Chemicals (adhesive resins in barrier structures) and DuPont (cost saving with ionomer resins).

Polyolefins will also be under the spotlight. Basell will talk on new film applications for highly modified PP, while Borealis will give papers on developments in mono-oriented films and innovations in PP for cast and blown film. New advances in Surpass PE resins will be discussed by Nova Chemicals, and Repsol Quimica will concentrate on applications for LDPE, EVA and EBA. UPM Raflatac will talk on trends in the label market.

New technology for producing high strength films will be discussed by Ole-Bendt Rasmussen at O-B R Enterprise, who originally made his name with high strength cross-ply structures now made by several licensees around the world. Machinery maker SML will discuss line concepts for hygiene film production.
