Alcan boosting North American operations

15 March 2005

Alcan Packaging is to establish a world class dedicated printing facility for folding cartons at its manufacturing site in Baie d'Urfé, Quebec. A contract packaging centre of excellence will also be set up at the company's US plant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Alcan will move the printing processes from the Bethlehem site to the Baie d'Urfé. The move will create some 50 new jobs in various positions at the Canadian facility and is due to be completed by the end of 2005.

The Contract Packaging and Specialty Cartons Business Unit currently employs over 500 people at the two sites, which serve the Canadian and US pharmaceutical and personal care markets.

"This decision will enable Alcan to extend its service to its customers by ensuring increased flexibility and delivery turnaround time," says Christel Bories, president and ceo. "By optimizing our existing product mix and dedication in our plants, we will be able to better grow our packaging business overall."
