AIMCAL’s first sustainability competition

26 March 2009

In the US, Unifoil Corp and DuPont Teijin Films are the first winners of The Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) 009 Sustainability Awards. Part of a larger awards programme that includes Technology of the Year and Vacuum Metallised or Coated Product of the Year prizes, the new Sustainability Award Competition honours equipment, materials or processes that reduce environmental impact, minimise energy usage or waste, and/or increase recycling.

Unifoil was recognised for the waste reduction achieved by its transfer metallising UniLustre paper or paperboard or UltraLustre film or rigid plastics to create a metallised or holographic substrate that conserves material and improves recyclability.

DuPont Teijin’s award recognises the environmental impact of its Mylar ECO heat sealable PET lidding film with 30 per cent post-consumer recycled content derived from PET bottles, 35 per cent post-industrial recycled content and 35 per cent virgin PET. Process adjustments ensure the film with the RPET content performs that same as 100 per cent virgin material.

AIMCAL’s Technology of the Year Award went to Tidland/Maxcess for its patent-pending e-Knifeholder, the world’s first electronic knifeholder for shear slitting. Graphic Packaging International took the Metallised Product of the Year Award for a susceptor equipped bag for McCain Popcorn Potatoes. Uflex, Noida, India, captured both the Marketing and Technical Awards in the Food and Beverage Packaging -Flexible category with an 8-colour, rotogravure printed pouch for Masafi Gourmet Potato Chips.
