TSKS targets mill niche

3 February 2004

Valmet aims at market for modular machines

The first installation of Valmet Converting's* new TSKS sheeter is at a major international paper manufacturer whose name has not yet been revealed. Valmet says the experience gained in upgrading the smaller TSK range of machines was vital in its development of the TSKS mill size model. The paper and board mill sheeter sector is now supplied by a limited number of machinery manufacturers and the company believes a substantial niche can be created for a modular design mill sheeter, at "a very competitive price".

Development

The TSK range will also continue to be developed. Since its launch at CMM in 2001, 17 machines have been produced in 1,450mm and 1,650mm widths. Features such as flying splice unwinds, dual level slitting, non stop pallet change, high accuracy cut-to-register and hologram capability are said to have enabled the growth of this product to be maintained.

Recently, a cut-size (A4) variant has been introduced and the first of this type will soon be installed in Europe, sheeting a specialist consumer type, sensitive coated paper. The finished reams will be delivered automatically on a conveyor system.

According to Valmet, the smaller CTS (converters' type) dead knife sheeter has also been very successful. Within the last two months, five have been sold to China, Malaysia, the Ukraine and the UK. The CTS is claimed to be "one of the very few 'budget price' dead knife machines able to meet the 'press-ready' requirements of modern, offset printers". It shares many features with the TSK range.

Steve Brimble, responsible for sheeters and paper winders at Valmet Converting, comments: "2003 was a not an easy year, as the market was still relatively quiet, but the fact that we were able to secure a very good share of the business available and consolidate our position as the leader in twin and dead knife sheeters for converters, was very pleasing.

"Never wanting to rest on our laurels, we are pleased to have introduced the mill class TSKS sheeter - and very attractive extra features for the TSK range. This year will see continued development and drupa will be the ideal opportunity to demonstrate what is new," he promises.
