Laem System earns recognition in the market

Italian company Laem System specialises in the engineering and manufacture of high tech slitter rewinders for the flexible packaging industry. Its main focus over the past five years has been directed towards the film manufacturing and metallizing sectors.

The company claims the winning ingredients in its success are the extremely high level of technology and manufacturing quality of its products, a flexible approach in designing and producing tailor-made systems to tackle customer’s concerns - and “a passionate and energetic approach to business”.

This is why leading multinational companies in the BOPP industry such as Treofan have decided to partner with Laem and return to it with several repeat orders over the past two years. The slitter manufacturer has supplied three of its TR 415 turret machines for Treofan’s Battipaglia plant, in Italy, specifically for the production of small finished reels of a special BOPP film grade used in the tobacco industry.

The TR 415 machine features a separate robust shaftless unwinder with pick-up from the ground, which can unwind with constant tension heavy jumbo rolls with an outer diameter of up to 1,270mm. The unwinder is connected to the machine body via an over-head web-path so as to guarantee the highest levels of hygiene in the final products. The web is kept flat by an S-wrap rubberized draw roller which pulls it evenly from the unwinder, eliminating any wrinkles before the ‘in-air’ slitting group.

The differential friction shafts with Laem’s closed-loop system are said to guarantee perfectly tensioned finished reels with constant tension parameters which can be retrieved and used over time. The automatic change-over turreting system, together with the cross-cutting device, maintain the machine’s productivity to the highest levels, it is claimed.

Finally, the finished reels are extracted automatically by the reel stripping device and collected by the SC 20 double-arm device.

Treofan’s management says it has received great benefits from this new technology, in terms of finished reels quality, but mainly because of the increased productivity.

Laem has also supplied its latest TR 555-3000 model to Treofan’s factory at Lamezia. This is a centre winding machine with individual motorized double-arm stations and independent pressure lay-on rollers, capable of winding rolls up to 1,200 mm OD.

Laem says this model is increasingly popular amongst the film manufacturers, especially because the company has developed several versions to suit the type and gauge of film which is being processed (BOPP-PET, CPP, polyolefin shrink film), as well as the machine’s width. A special version is also available for delicate metallized and coated high barrier films.

The three metre width machine supplied to Treofan can unwind extremely heavy jumbo rolls with an OD up to 1,270 mm, thanks to its sturdy two-block unwinder. Any gauge defect is spread along the width by the motorized edge control head which swivels laterally, putting the unwinder in motion. The large diameter carbon fibre process rollers together with Laem’s tendency driven system are claimed to guarantee optimum handling of the web at process speeds of over 1,000 m/min.

The machine also features a fully automatic positioning system for the knifeholders and rewinding stations. Each arm mounts an independent motor used both for the automatic positioning and the core chucking/release. This is said to add safety and rigidity to the system, avoiding any possible accidents.

This machine model also includes three different types of station according to the minimum required winding width: 190, 260 and 450 mm.

Another installation last year was at KWH Plast, a leading CPP film manufacturing company in Finland. This was an advanced TR 555-2600 machine which can process CPP films from 40-400 micron with stringent minimum width requirements. Laem devised a special system that completely eliminated production downtime when changing from razor blades to circular knives.

At the other end of the scale, Laem emphasises the construction quality, technology level and standardization reached on its ‘entry level’ slitters of the RB Series: the RB2 dual shaft and RB4 turret machines. The company claims that the price-quality ratio of these machines “is outstanding, and together with the short lead-time of one to three months, it becomes a popular choice for all emerging markets with sudden increases in demand”.
