Case study: Primaflex pleases Schur

9 October 2006

A quartet of W&H Primaflex CM presses is to be found at the flexo technology centre of Schur Flexible, in Flensburg, Germany. The four eight colour CI machines represent the core part of the new facility. With their commissioning, Schur has completed an extensive structural change within just six months, including the dismantling of existing equipment and the installation of the new presses. In another aspect of support from W&H some of the original equipment went to its Garant subsidiary for re-use.

"Setting up various technology centres in Europe is part of our reform scheme and aimed at making production even more efficient," says Hans Schur, managing partner of Schur Flexible. “The four Primaflex CM flexo presses in Flensburg offer us major advantages in more than one respect. Not only do they have the same repeat lengths and printing widths, they also feature an identical design and layout, enabling us to print any order on any of them.

“This gives us maximum flexibility with sleeve adapters, anilox rolls, and so on, because all sleeves and adapters are interchangeable as well. In actual fact, flexibility is not confined to the machines themselves, but also applies to operation, which means that any operator can handle any of the four new machines.”

Concurrent with the installation of the new printing equipment, Schur also re-organized its prepress operations, with a focus on fast job change-over and efficient press makeready. For this purpose, the Primaflex C features “easy to operate” manual hinged cap bearings as well as the Turboclean ink supply and wash-up system. The investment included new sleeves as well as an ink mixing installation for optimal ink management.

Hans Schur reveals: "Because of our good experience with the Primaflex C, as far as set-up times, handling and printing speeds are concerned, we will shortly put another Primaflex C on stream in our factory in Poland, this time a 10 colour machine. This will bring our overall Primaflex C capacity to a total of six presses.”
