Rewarding relationships

30 August 2006

This month we are proud to reinforce our commitment to the industry with major initiatives in co-operation with two of its leading organizations.

First, as you will read in our news section, The IOP: The Packaging Society is to partner Converting Today publisher the Wilmington Group in running next year's prestigious Starpack packaging awards programme in the UK. As IOP: The Packaging Society chief Gordon Stewart says: “The Wilmington Group brings extra impetus to the awards programme across a range of end user and technical sectors of industry”. In addition to Converting Today, the deal includes media support from magazines such as Packaging Today and RFID Solutions, among others.

We especially value our association with The Starpack programme for its recognition of the vital need to encourage the next generation of packaging professionals through its Student and Schools Awards. To quote Gordon Stewart again: “The Student and Schools Starpack Awards honour students and pupils from the nation's universities, colleges and schools to create a pool of talent that will become the life force of the packaging industry”.

In the coming months, we will keep you informed on the progress of the next Starpack Awards, culminating in the presentation ceremony, to be held during the Total Processing & Packaging Exhibition, on May 15, 2007, at the UK's National Motorcycle Museum. We hope to see you there.

Our second co-operative initiative is with flexo printing association EFTA, whose new Cash In Waste Award to recognize and encourage companies that achieve effective waste management in their day-to-day operations will be sponsored by Converting Today. Full details of the new award appear in our features section, but the thinking behind it is summarized by EFTA managing director Lesley Hide.

“Waste minimization is essential to continued success,” she says. “All companies produce waste. Savings needn't require high capital spending. Companies of all sizes can benefit. Success can be shared. But you will only be successful if you motivate staff and gain commitment from everyone.”

Full marks to the association for encouraging converters and suppliers alike to focus on the benefits that effective waste management can bring not just for the environment, but also to the efficiency of their companies and, potentially, to their profitability. Perhaps your company will be a winner!
