Printers on the march

8 May 2008

This is the most exciting time for the industry. Our biggest exhibition, drupa 2008, opens its gates on May 29 to a predicted 400,000 visitors.

Drupa needs no introduction. For over 50 years, it’s been regarded as THE event where the industry’s key developments are unveiled. No other trade show has created quite the same impact over the years as drupa.

And this year promises to be no different. In fact, bigger than ever before, drupa 2008 is spread across a massive 170,000m2, hosting over 1,800 exhibitors.

The buzz words in the arena of packaging converting at this year’s event are exquisite finishing concepts, and security printing.

Converters are expected to meet the ever increasing demands of packaging uniqueness, reduced lead times and lowered costs.

In line with this, the latest techniques taking centre stage this drupa include metallic effects, varnishing, foil embossing, and colour consistency.

As ever, the focus is also on improving productivity. At the show, you will see increased formats on sheet-fed offset presses, along with economical short run printing on offset and flexo machines. Innovations have also been lined up by digital press manufacturers who are wooing packaging printers and label converters.

Another dominant force, in the future, will be the hybrid presses, which combine high productivity and flexibility. This mega event might just be the place to get a glimpse of the latest hybrid processes.

Also at the forefront today are RFID and security printing technologies. Drupa 2008 is set to provide a window into the latest anti-counterfeiting and traceability techniques, smart and active packaging methods, printed electronics, and much more.

Environmental issues are also sure to be high on your agenda and this show may turn out to be a good opportunity to invest in innovative waste reduction technologies.

Given what’s on offer, drupa 2008 seems to be the perfect occasion to update yourself on the latest technologies, undertake research, network, and make sound business decisions. It provides an unique opportunity to view the latest innovations in action at one place.

I am sure drupa 2008 will prove an incredible experience and I am looking forward to it. Hope to see you there!
