Looking forward

13 March 2008

Well here I am with my first issue as the Editor, picking up the reins from Mike with a lot of enthusiasm, and a bit of anxiousness.

It’s both a challenge and an honour to take over the editor’s chair and this was aptly summed up by the director of a major label converter who I met at the recently held EFTA awards, where I also had the privilege of presenting the Cash in Waste Awards.

“You must feel very fortunate,” he said, “to have such an accomplished mentor as Mike.” Sure I do, because it’s quite a challenge to step into the shoes of my predecessors - Pauline Covell and Mike Taylor - who have, over the past 20 odd years, delivered high quality content every month.

I do graciously accept this honour and will endeavour to continue the tradition of providing the best and most up-to-date information and analysis from the industry.

As well as continuing the good work, I do plan to bring in new a look and new regular features into the magazine and on the Converting Today website.

In my first issue as the Editor, we bring you the latest innovations and happenings from the Italian converting industry through case studies, news, and discussions. One of the issues we look at in this section is the ever-debatable topic of the most appropriate treatment method for film production - flame or corona.

We also examine the emerging digital printing technology and its potential in packaging printing, which is one of the strongest and fastest growing sectors in the digital marketplace. Another feature discusses how the demand for high quality is driving development of the next generation of UV inkjet printers.

In our carton and corrugated features, we analyze whether flexo presses are now able to provide the same level of high quality prints as litho presses.

Apart from getting this issue underway, I have also been busy travelling a lot in order to attend a number of pre-drupa conferences. To be inaugurated in less than 70 days, the Olympics of all print shows certainly promises to live up to its reputation for providing the biggest platform for innovations and networking. From here forward, we will focus heavily on the show’s major attractions and exhibits in the run-up to the event.

I am certainly looking forward to the coming months, and years, and I hope you are on board with me. I would like to hear from you, your views on Converting Today to help me make it a more enjoyable read.
